What's the exact value of a euro ? aske
Euromemo inventor Jean-Marc WILVERS. "About fourty francs?" I
stammer. He cuts me off : "Wrong. It's worth one euro".
Says WILVERS : "Your problem is that you've been trained to think in
francs. Your subconscient knows that 400 BEF can buy a meal and 800 BEF a
CD. In two years, you'll have to recreate your reference points in euro.
"If you do it by translating figures back into francs with a
calculator, you'll think en francs forever. And that's absurd. Do we still
in Roman sesterces, like Asterix and Obelix?"
Untill he pointed it out, I didn't know I had a problem. But with euro
notes and coins hitting the streets as common currency on January 1, 2002,
maybe it's time to prepare for the changeover.
WILVERS claims to have designed the perfect antidote to euro currency
malaise. He boast that Euromemo, silvermedal winner at the 199 Brussels
World Inventors' Fair, "reprogrammes the sunconscient to think in
euros".
His invention is a simple wall calendar. Down its left-hand side is a
scale running from zero tu €1 million, alongside whose values you paste
stamp-sized picture stickers, or "golden values", depicting
familiar consumer items : newspapers, chips, stereos and motorbikes. You
can stick the petrol pump icon on a level with €1, a steak (for a meal
out) at 10, a computer at 1.000, a litthe car at 10.000, a little house at
100.000, and a big villa (or a castle) at a million.
"Every day, you'll see these items and you'll register how much a
euro is worth. Pressty soon, you'll stop thinking in francs".
WILVERS was estate agent befor a back condition forced him to retire seven
years ago. Seeking relief from his pain, he turned to inventing, churning
out 30 patents in five years, including several contraptions to help
backpain-sufferers. "The pain was unbearable", he remembers.
"I just figured out small ways to help myself and others, mostly
involving learning how to sleep better." Then came the euro idea.
Publishing compagny CREART stumped up the cash to print 30.000 calendars.
Now all WILVERS has to do is find his market. "We're close to
clinching a deal with a major bank," he says. "The idea is that
people should get them them free. They should'nt have to buy them."
Two European Commission officials responsible for promoting the euro
refused to pass judgement when questione on the initiative. "It'sa
sound invention," said one. "But we cannot comment officially;
we're not here to make Mr WILVERS rich."
WILVERS will appear at the Heyzel Marketing Fair from May 10 to 12. If
you'd like information or a copy of the calendar, you can contact him by
phone : 0475/47.50.50.
